Case Study: Solar Shading Analysis

How does Scanifly’s solar shading analysis work?

Using local weather data and tracking the sun's path, Scanifly determines TOF, Solar Access, and TSRF values for each solar array of the proposed solar project

Scanifly's shade analysis software is approved by state-level regulatory bodies across the U.S., as well as by many lenders

The virtual solar viewsheds generated are within 1% of SunEye readings at the same site, and, in some cases, >20% more accurate than satellite imagery derived shade reports

solar shading analysis of tree heights and vegetation

Tree Heights/Vegetation

Eliminate inaccurate modeling and gain superior solar shading analysis by determining exact size, height, or density of vegetation on or around a proposed site. If sparse trees don’t map as well, import specific genus and species of 3D trees into the Scanifly model.

solar shading analysis of rooftop obstructions

Rooftop Obstructions

3D map all vent pipes, attic fans, HVAC systems, parapets, and any other structures that could cause even the slightest shading on-site. Not only does this provide enhanced precision of system layouts, but also delivers real-world context and thus improved system performance modeling.

solar shading analysis of tall objects and structures

Tall Objects and Structures

Avoid estimating the heights and sizes of anything on-site. By utilizing drones and Scanifly’s 3D modeling software, users can quantify the impact of all objects and structures on system production.

solar shading analysis of adjacent buildings

Adjacent Buildings

Nearby buildings can create significant losses. Scanifly’s software performs shading analysis inclusive of any objects 3D mapped by the drone’s camera.

solar shading analysis of new build construction

New Build Construction

Create the most up-to-date maps and accurate 3D models of newly completed sites. Often these do not exist in satellite imagery. In some locations, such as California, shading analysis is mandatory for approval by local AHJs or regulatory bodies to obtain financial incentives and a certificate of occupancy.

solar shading analysis of interrow spacing

Interrow Spacing

Simulate shadows between each row of a system to determine optimal spacing. Scanifly’s ground mount tool automatically tracks the topography underneath each array, causing module rows to reflect the wavy terrain beneath it. This enhances shade simulations and provides for more accurate interrow spacing optimization.

Project Example

E2 Solar began using Scanifly’s solar shading analysis software in March 2020. For their first project, a 9kW site, they already manually taped and conducted a Solmetric SunEye analysis. Here are E2’s conclusions - verbatim:

“E2 Solar is to a point internally to make this our defacto shade tool.

  1. ‘I believe using the drone images and modeling software they (Scanifly) use, their sun charts are as accurate (if not even better) than the Solmetric. You can see the results attached are within about 1% of each other.

  2. ‘Real’ (drone) images provide better resolution and are not hampered by metal roofs or objects.

  3. It is substantially faster and easier to “simulate” a sun chart from any location on a roof. Using a solmetric becomes very cumbersome to take say 20 shots, where with Scanifly, you can simply plot a sun chart from anywhere in a matter of seconds.

“...You all know we are conservative, professional, and committed to this industry. I would not make this recommendation if I did not think highly of it and I want my salespeople off the roof!”
